May 29–31, 2026 · Sonora, California
Three days. Four films. One icon. Sonora Film Festival returns to the Sierra Nevada foothills with a program devoted entirely to the singular, untameable genius of Nicolas Cage.
A drifter rolls into the tiny Wyoming town of Red Rock looking for work and is immediately mistaken for a hitman by the local bar owner. John Dahl's sleek neo-noir crackles with wrong-place, wrong-time dread, and Cage — haunted, broke, almost doing the right thing — has never been more watchably trapped. The perfect opener for a weekend in the foothills.
Summary removed by the festival chairman. Reasons undisclosed.
A man escapes from Hell — literally — to stop a cult from sacrificing his granddaughter. Cage drives fast cars, shoots people, and never once removes his sunglasses. One of the great Saturday night movies ever made.
A ventriloquist's dummy begins to take control of its owner in Attenborough's deeply unsettling psychological thriller. Hopkins is terrifyingly good. Our closing night selection — leave the lights on for the drive back through the mountains.
"The Sundance of Sonora"
Founded in 2022 in the Sierra Nevada foothills, the Sonora Film Festival is Northern California's premier film festival, featuring the finest selection of overlooked, forgotten, underrated films—hand selected by our panel of experts.
Built in 1889 by a silver-tongued prospector who never found gold but somehow built the most beautiful room in the Sierra Nevada, The Rio Rando Grand Theatre is a fully restored Victorian jewel box — hand-painted ceilings, red velvet balconies, and a proscenium arch that makes every frame look like a painting. There is no better place in California to watch a movie.
